Happy Baby?

not so much…

Or as we say in the men’s class, “giving birth pose”, dead bug, or ”just another Saturday night”

See, you DID do it!

See! You USED to be able to do it!

Tough to do for many guys:

- Can’t grab feet, or even ankles

- Tough to get feet up to ceiling while knees bent

- Tough to get chin tucked and back flat on floor

Solutions:

- Tight hamstrings: keep the feet together, use a strap to bring hips down/open

- Tight hips: use a strap

- Tight upper back/neck (tough to get head on ground /w tucked chin): use blanket , block under head

Eventually we’ll get to this; comfortably.

This year for the first time the Prostate Cancer Foundation of BC will be hosting a charity fun race at Mt Seymour. The Race to End Prostate Cancer will happen on Thursday 31 January. The aim is to raise $10,000 for cancer research and increase awareness about this disease, which is the most common cancer in men. I invite you to support this event by entering yourself or a team from your office, providing a donation for the silent auction or by passing this email on to anyone who may want to participate.

The race is presented by North Shore Acura and is modelled on charity golf tournaments; racers will guess their time and the closest guess wins. Anyone who skis or snowboards is welcome to participate. A cocktail reception and silent auction will follow the race. The goal for the day is fun and getting to know your peers in the business community. A detailed info sheet is attached to this email and registration can be done online at www.prostatecancerbc.ca/events/.

Any support you can provide would mean a lot. Mt Seymour hopes to make this an annual event to support a great cause and welcome our neighbours to the resort. If you have any questions about this event please don’t hesitate to contact me (604-986-2261 x245 orjmosley@mountseymour.com). More information about prostate cancer and the Prostate Cancer Foundation of BC can be found at www.prostatecancerbc.ca.

Hi YoGuys,

Thanks for offering to post my housing need to your list.

Here’s what I’m looking for:

Need to move for 3-storey house I’ve been renting and i’m downsizing to what I think will be a 1 bedroom + den kind of place.

Areas of interest include Fairview, False Creek, Mount Pleasant, and even Strathcona. My current budget is around $1300, but can go up to accommodate the right sort of place (probably to $1600). In a perfect world, I find a place with a balcony or deck (won’t take a basement unless it really does adjoin a garden), near shops, has in-suite laundry (or possibly in-building), and some storage. Want it for 15 December or 1 January.

Many thanks,

Jason

Yoga Teacher = FAIL

http://yogaisforlovers.wordpress.com/2012/11/18/yoga-for-men-on-yahoo/

“Normally, something like this would set me off on yet another rant about the gendering of yoga in this country.”

WOW (but sadly, typical of the comments I’ve seen on the Internet)

FIRST:
This IS a yoga teacher; why is she SO mad (i.e “”another rant”)? She admits this is not her first time ; apparently typical of how she conducts herself. Talk about lack of self control. Without getting all yogi on you, one of the foundations yoga is SUPPOSED to teach is “to let go” (non-attachment): http://www.swamij.com/yoga-sutras-11216.htm

“Practice and non-attachment are the two core principles on which the entire system of Yoga rests”

I guess she fails that test.

SECOND:
“Gendering of yoga”? Are you kidding me? Have you looked around your classes?
THE INDUSTRY IS STATISICALY GENDER BIASED TOWARD FEMALES.
Do you see as many men as women? ONLY if your teaching a Bikram class in East Vancouver. Deep Cove? Point Grey? you’ll be the ONLY guy in class.
How can you have a problem about getting more men to come out to yoga?
What are YOU doing about it? I suspect , nothing.

Unbiased? I think not.

Yoga teacher? = FAIL!

Neck pain affects around 70 percent of people sometime during their lives; a common condition that you will most likely see every day. prevent or reverse forward head posture and the resultant pain that accompanies it.

STRETCH IT!

To help, here is a good corrective neck stretch:

sit or stand upright

relax your shoulders by moving them down and slightly backward (neutral posture)

place one finger on your chin, slightly tuck your chin

move your head backward like a “chicken” or like Mick Jagger while gently pressing on your chin

hold this position for about two seconds and then release

Repeat this stretch several times. (Figures 5, 6)

STRENGTHEN IT!

Once you have mastered the corrective stretch, a corrective strengthening exercise can be perform every day in your parked/stopped car; “neck press backs.” Only perform this exercise if there is no discomfort.

sit upright and relax their shoulders down and backward (neutral posture)

slightly tuck your chin

move your head backward like a “chicken” or like Mick Jagger, while pressing back into your headrest (neck retraction)

hold this isometric contraction for 5 to 10 seconds

repeat this 2 to 3 times. (Figures 7,8)
